My experience with Walmart pricematch & Where they can improve significantly in the short term?
Fallout 4 on Amazon |
I am a big fan of Amazon as well as Walmart. While Walmart's positioning in the market historically was seen as a producer of cheap bulk products, and people would often pat their backs for being an 'only' Whole foods or traders joe buyer, I have always felt that shopping must mean best of all worlds. One needs to understand what to pick from where.
As a consumer, A large number of commodities are better positioned at Walmart than anyone else ( in some cases even better than Costco). but, Walmart has improved their positioning, their product mix, bringing in lines of organic products and I lot it. the shopping experience may not as 'suave' as Whole foods or as 'red' as Target, but I still like to head to Walmart for a lot of items.
As a technologist, I love Walmart for all the effort they have been putting in marketing, improving their e-commerce and building all the cool stuff which today's customers expect. I don't like Target in that regards or most of the other big retailers in comparison.
Walmart launched their curbside pick-up of grocery pickup, online to store with a dedicated pickup location and recently their easy return and I love it. I have always loved their 'self-checkout' and those terminals have been upgraded recently to making them much faster.
However, one thing which I recently experienced was around price match.
Walmart has been advertising offering people incentives for ordering online on items available in a store, which they go pick up themselves because that saves Walmart quite a bit of money.
In some regards, I expected that Walmart would also offer price match as they are trying to compete with Amazon.
I was looking to order the fallout 4 for myself and noticed:
- Walmart's price was higher in comparison to Amazon's fallout 4 price.
- Walmart's nearest store to me had this game in stock and available, so if I got a better price I could go and pick it up immediately.
Hence I started looking for price match feature onWalmartt, which I haven't used before. Here is the link to Walmart's price match policy page.

After reading through it, I started with the option for contacting customer care. I loved that they have a flag to 'Are you contacting us about a price match?'.
Although I don't appreciate them saying 'ITEM ID' because a lot of people won't understand that, or struggle with that.

Finally, after filling up all the information, the chat began.
I had to wait for 8 minutes in total before the chat agent came online. Long story short, after 20 mins of conversation, the chat agent mentioned that they can do the price match for me if I can go and pick up this item in 2 days time.
This was shocking and not expected.
The chat agent went on to explain the reasoning, but honestly, I was already frustrated with the amount of time it had taken and I disconnected.
I still love Walmart and I know they are experimenting with many things, but I wish given the holiday season is fast approaching they fix these type of things in their experience.
And regarding my order, I placed the order on Amazon immediately and I am expecting it to arrive sometime today.
